Noninvasive Facelift Q & A

What is a noninvasive facelift?

A noninvasive facelift is a method of improving the quality and tightness of your skin so that you get a more uplifted, youthful look without surgery or needles. Dr. Dyce uses the Icon laser to initiate a process called collagen remodeling that makes your skin stronger and more resilient.

Why does my skin look saggy and droopy?

When you’re young, your skin is thick, firm, and filled with long strands of the protein, collagen, which forms a matrix that supports your skin. Your skin is also rich with the elasticizing protein, elastin, which is why youthful skin snaps back into place after being pulled or pinched.

The sun and aging deplete your stores of collagen and elastin and also robs your skin of plumping fat. It’s almost like someone let the “air” out of your balloon. Your skin doesn’t have the support or elasticity it used to have, so it droops and sags.

How does the Icon lift my face without surgery?

The Icon improves the quality of your skin by targeting its deepest layers. The heat from the laser’s energy starts a process in which your skin gets rid of old collagen and elastin that isn’t doing its job properly and starts producing fresh, strong collagen and elastin. These new proteins build your skin back up from the inside out.

As your collagen-remodeling process continues, wrinkles and lines smooth out. Your firmer, plumper skin also tightens, creating a mini facelift that undoes unflattering sags and droops.

How long does a noninvasive facelift take?

Your Icon laser facelift only takes about half an hour. You can have your treatment during your lunch hour and then go straight back to work or other activities.

After your Icon treatment, your skin looks glowing and healthful. However, your benefits have only begun. Over the next six to nine months, your face gets tighter and firmer as the collagen-remodeling pro cess rebuilds the structure of your skin.

Does a noninvasive Icon facelift hurt?

Dr. Dyce keeps you as comfortable as possible during your Icon facelift. The Icon has a special cooling system to compensate for the laser’s heat. During your consultation, you discuss whether you might benefit from a local anesthetic, too.

What is botox?

Botox and Xeomin are both the most commonly used non-surgical treatment with over four million injections performed in the US in 2015 alone.  Botox and Xeomin are neuro-modulators that are injected into the muscle, causing it to temporarily relax. The relaxed muscle can no longer contract and therefore cannot create a wrinkle.

Neurotoxin injections effectively treat fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows, forehead creases, and crows feet around the eyes, and other wrinkles in the upper face region.  Neurotoxin injections can also be effective if you have loose skin creating banding in the neck (turkey neck).

Results from Botox or Xeomin can be seen within three to seven days and last for three to four months. Botox requires regular, ongoing treatments to stop wrinkles from returning. We advise our patients book standing appointments for this service, which takes just a few minutes in the office.  For deeper wrinkles, it may take several treatments to achieve the desired outcome, or neurotoxin injections can be combined with laser treatments (usually performed at separate appointments) to get a more lasting result.  There are very few side effects associated with this injection, but common side effects are temporary muscle weakness, tenderness/redness/swelling at the injection site.

What are dermal fillers?

Loss of facial volume results in sagging skin, sunken orbits, lower cheeks and the illusion of sagging skin.   Dr. Dyce can restore this volume, without surgery, in just a few minutes and you’ll look like you had a facelift.   These procedures, using the appropriate dermal filler, are sometimes called “Liquid Facelifts”.  Dermal fillers are used to fill lines and spaces, plumping them to increase volume and are most commonly used in the mid to lower face.  At Black Creek Medical Consultants, we frequently use dermal fillers in the cheeks, the lines that run from your nose to your mouth (nasolabial folds), the lips, the lines running from the sides of the mouth down to the chin (marionette lines), indentations from scars, or any other sunken areas of the face. When necessary, dermal fillers can also be used under the eyes and in the temples.

The most common dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid- based fillers and include Belotero and the Juvederm family of fillers to include Juvederm Ultra XC and Ultra Plus, Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella.  Dr. Dyce’s filler of choice in the semi-permanent category is Radiesse which he uses to achieve a more skeletal or structural change.

There is very little downtime associated with dermal fillers, although the most common side effect is tenderness/bruising/ swelling at the injection site.  Very infrequently, a patient can have an allergic reaction to a component of the filler.  The expected longevity of any of the hyaluronic acid-based fillers is 9 months to 2 years, and for the semi-permanent fillers you should expect about 18 months to three years of benefit.  Results will vary based on the patient and their individual metabolism of the filler.

Intense Pulse Light, RadioFrequency, and Laser Treatments

Correction of pigmentation, fine lines, blotchiness, and redness are done with the right combination of skin care products and powerful light technology such as IPL and lasers.  The correction of these common skin issues often results in a youthfulness that can mimic a facelift.  Dr. Dyce also uses radiofrequency for the correction of fine lines, tightening of the skin, and to improve the appearance of cellulite.   The use of lasers to address deep lines and wrinkles and to improve tone/ texture allows our office to achieve results much more quickly than topical products can alone.  Combined with neurotoxin and dermal fillers, a very youthful look can be achieved and many of the signs of aging can be reversed.

Our office offers IPL therapy, Fractional laser therapy, and radiofrequency therapy.  Another popular “Facelift” therapy is Sculpsure (permanent fat reduction) under the chin.  This innovative laser technology delivers heat safely below the skin to permanently destroy fat cells.  The procedure is comfortable and safe, lasting only 25 minutes per treatment and results are achieved in one or two sessions.  A lesser known benefit of Sculpsure submental (under chin) treatments is that it is effective at skin tightening.  Further tightening can be achieved with radiofrequency, if needed.
